so he says, “I’ve got a way you can live, y’know?”
She looks up at him, gaze examining, gaze unshocked. “You a fucking vampire or something?” she asks, but it’s not a question at all. There is no shock to her.
Rather, she looks at him like she knows him.
It’s not a shock, really, that it’s not a shock to her, because Thomas has always known that she is clever, that she has a bit of an edge to her that makes her able to pick up on the things that others willfully ignore, but still he asks: “How’d you know?”
“You’re otherworldly beautiful,” She says through labored breaths, “You never eat anything when we meet up at diners- stupid move on your part, if you wanted to cover up your identity, by the way, and I’m not fucking fooled by your “contacts.” If you’re human, I’m a fucking ghost detective.”
Thomas’ golden eyes blink. Ringed by gold eyeshadow, most think them to be the quirk of a pretentious artist, and he has been unafraid to indulge such instincts over the past few decades, ever since contacts came into vogue. “You’ll end up a ghost if I don’t turn you soon,” he says, and it’s not supposed to come out as a bit of a whine, but Esther wasn’t wrong when she’d called him pathetic, all those years ago, when she’d talked about his weakness for his fledglings, few as there were. There have been many humans that Thomas has fucked or fed from, but those pretty few that he has turned into something more? That he has looked at dying and known that he wants forever at their sides?
No matter how much of an asshole Esther is, she’s not fucking wrong.
Crystal doesn’t blink as she orders: “Then fucking do it.”

As the Cat King leaves the alleyway, as those little ghosts are set to leave, there are people coming out of the Tongue and Tail. Pretty much every client of Jenny Green’s is someone he has seen at some point around before, and even a change of clothing and hair shade would not make them glance twice at him, especially when he instinctually puts up a glamour that disguises the shape and color of eyes that he can no longer see the gilded gleam of-
But then he matches eyes with Edwin's feisty friend, that living girl with too much sight and too much bitterness and too much loneliness and an ill-advised fling with Edwin's one true love, if his cats are to be believed, and the world blooms into color.
Life number four. Soulmate number four. This one is destined to end as tragically as the rest, to leave him as lonely as he's ever been.
And yet, the girl steps forward towards him. Strides forward, really, all confidence, the sort of way that you do not when you have unearned arrogance, but the way that you do when you've died before and you've had to build yourself back with broken pieces, stronger than ever before.
She steps up to him, and she looks at him, dead in the eyes, and she says, “Y’know, I wondered why your eyes looked so fucking different from everyone else’s.”
She sees through the glamour, the Cat King thinks, because of course she does. Because he has never been able to keep the truth away from his soulmates, he has never been able to do anything but strip himself to the bone for the pleasure of seeing their eyes laid upon him.
-aletterinthenameofsanity, you could drown in those eyes (so it's summer, so it's suicide)
I want you to know that it's our time
You and me bleed the same light
I want you to know that I'm all yours
You and me run the same course

Chapter 2 now up!!!!
A character we don't talk much about is Maren. Which is fair, she's barely there for one single episode. But I find her so interesting. So, humour me, please:
We know why she's a victim. She's a teenager, dating a toxic jock with a reputation of ruining other girls' lives. She shared her nude pictures with her boyfriend and he betrayed her trust by sharing them without her permission (also mocking her for it, and using her dignity as blackmail)
Why is she also a victimizer? Well, the obvious answer would be that she killed two boys. As unintentional and debatably justified as the murdering was. And let's not forget that she then almost killed Crystal, too. Because even if she immediately regretted it, Maren consciously lured Crystal to her house with the purpose of getting rid of her.
But I'm not as interested in the murdering part, as I am in the other, less obvious ways in which Maren carries responsibility for the suffering of others. And now this is even more nuanced:
Maren was intimately associated with two boys (that basically functioned as a single unit) who she knew were responsible for hurting multiple people. She knew of the way they treated Twitchy Ritchy, she knew it so well that he was the one she went to for help getting rid of their bodies. She trusted him to hate them enough to keep that secret.
She was aware of how awful these boys were to Shelby. Maren said it herself, how she knew that they would ruin her life, just like they had done to Shelby's.
And yet, she chose to continue to associate with them.
Now this is not to villainize Maren. I think she's a very interesting character for how little screen time she got. The full length of her relationship with Brad and Hunter was not written into the show. So we don't know how much coercion from their part played a role in the whole thing. And I mean, she IS a teenager, after all.
However I do feel that we as expectators can see her story and think about all the times where a woman (of any age) chooses to maintain a relationship with a bad man™, who is responsible for the suffering of others, and to look away from all that pain. That is, until the day that she is the one being directly hurt, in a way that she can no longer accept.
(I'm thinking about all those white women dating far right extremists, being ok with racism and homophobia and even misogyny. Until suddenly they see their own autonomy being limited. Those women dating billionaires for the benefits, thinking they'll get a cut out of it. And then realizing that they made a deal with the devil when they don't get their part of the deal.)
But hindsight is 20/20. In the end, Maren takes responsibility for her actions, something that Brad and Hunter refused to do even as they were dragged to hell. And there certainly is some honour in that. Like Crystal put it, she also lost her life to boys that went too far.
